    Greetings from CAHO!

    With a growing number of healthcare organizations achieving NABH, NABL and JCI accreditation, there has been a need for a common platform that will facilitate communication amongst the accredited HCOs, share best practices, and provide benchmarking, while promoting and continuously improving the quality and safety of healthcare services provided by the HCOs across India, in collaboration with all stakeholders.

    The Consortium of Accredited Healthcare Organisations (CAHO) is a not-for-profit society that was formed to fulfil this need.

    The primary objective of CAHO is to promote collaboration among accredited hospitals and laboratories to initiate efforts to improve healthcare quality and to work closely with NABH and NABL.

    The proposed activities of CAHO include:

    • To maintain a membership of Accredited HCO members and ensure establishment of communication forums.
    • To promote a nationwide quality movement in healthcare, aimed at creating awareness amongst consumers and other stakeholders.
    • To promote and undertake research activities and establish benchmarks in the area of healthcare quality and establish as a repository of best international/national practices, including sharing of clinical indicators and dissemination of the above among the accredited healthcare organizations to improve clinical outcomes.
    • To interact and be involved in the initiatives of the Government’s healthcare quality improvement initiatives especially in policy decisions and other regulatory matters.
    • To introduce continuous quality improvement and patient safety measures by developing and upgrading appropriate quality measures within the accredited healthcare organizations.
    • To act as an umbrella of collective wisdom to provide feedback to NABH and NABL on the expectations from industry in terms of value addition after accreditation.
    • To liaise with paying agencies like CGHS, ECHS, and Insurance companies to derive benefit from accredited hospitals.
    • To share constructive concerns with NABH and NABL with respect to the assessment and accreditation processes, with a view towards improving the effectiveness and efficiency in the overall functioning of NABH and NABL.
    • To promote accreditation in association with the Ministry of Tourism to enhance the country’s potential for Medical Tourism and promote the Indian healthcare industry as a preferred destination among other countries.
    • To undertake capacity building initiatives in the area of healthcare quality and safety through education and skill building programs.

    CAHO has come a long way since its inception. Today, we work closely with the NABH, NABL and the Quality Council of India. We are represented on the Board of NABH and facilitated feedback on the 4th Edition of the Accreditation Standards. True to our aim of promoting accreditation among healthcare institutions, CAHO facilitated the introduction of entry-level standards of accreditation through NABH, and has promoted these standards through State Governments and the IRDA. We also developed a Guidebook on the Entry-Level Standards of Accreditation with NABH and the World Bank. With the same partners and IIM-B, we are now conducting a study to examine the economic impact of accreditation on accredited hospitals.

    We are also represented on the Task Force for Public Health Policy, Government of Karnataka. CAHO is a part of the National Steering Committee to review ethical and legal perspectives of healthcare in India, to compel the government to regulate the amount of compensation alleged medical negligence. To minimise incidents of medical negligence, CAHO is working with speciality organisations to develop zero tolerance actions for consultants. A partnership with the healthcare Sector Skills Council is also being followed upon.

    CAHO supported the Ministry of Health on nurse practitioners and facilitated the formation of Nurses for a Cause. We contributed to the Allied Health Sciences Bill by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. CAHO is lobbying the government to make ultrasound technology available to all for improved quality of care.

    CAHO is changing the face of healthcare communication in the country. We introduced the incorporation of healthcare communication among the accreditation standards in the 4th edition. We have conducted national-level workshops in healthcare communication, training hundreds of healthcare workers across the country. The communication workshops, an important part of the quality movement, have been endorsed by the NABH, and the National Board of Examinations have trained their faculty to impart this knowledge to their thousands of post-graduate students. We have also produced an e-learning course on healthcare communication.

    CAHO has identified and is working on the following areas to focus for guiding and training member hospitals across the country:

    • Energy Conservation
    • Disaster Management
    • Technology Adoption for Promoting Quality

    CAHO is also working for increasing the visibility and value of accreditation to general public. We are working to bring out an app which will allow people to access Safer Patient Care.

    CAHO has organised programs for promoting and maintaining accreditation with member healthcare institutions. Events organised in 2015 with Max and Sir Ganga Ram in Delhi and Kokila Ben Hospital in Mumbai are some examples.

    Our first national conference, CAHOCON 2015 held in New Delhi, furthered our aim of bringing together the stakeholders and leaders of our sector to improve and advance the delivery of healthcare quality in India.

    These are only some of the accomplishments achieved by CAHO this year, and they are due to the involvement of member hospitals and the support of the dedicated CAHO secretariat.
